Revive Tanki now runs natively on Linux and macOS, including Macs with Apple processors. You can get both versions on the download page.

That is the most visible result of the last update, which was the biggest one the project has ever received. From the outside it mostly looked like a list of new bugs, so here is what actually happened.

Why this update

The game was built on technology that is almost ten years old. It kept running, but it set hard limits: no new platforms, and every fix took longer than it should. With this update the whole game moved onto a new technical foundation. The goal was that you notice as little of it as possible: same game, same look, same feel.

What it makes possible

  • Linux and macOS: native versions with their own downloads and automatic updates, just like on Windows.
  • 64-bit on Windows: together with a new installer.
  • Faster updates: building and releasing a new version now takes a fraction of the time it used to. Fixes reach you much sooner than before.

It also opens the door for things that simply were not possible until now. More on that when they are ready.

About the bugs

Moving an entire game is not a small step, and some things broke on the way. Thank you to everyone who reported problems, sent logs and crash files and tested fixes with us over the last days. Several of the fixes below exist because of you.

Fixed

Crashes and updates

  • Random crashes in the middle of a battle
  • Crash when entering a second battle
  • Updates failing on Windows when a file was still in use
  • Updates failing on macOS
  • Restarting the game from the settings on Linux and macOS

Battle

  • Module cooldown counting down unevenly
  • Wrong collision on the bridges of Iran
  • Flickering bonus boxes
  • Trees disappearing in the distance
  • Sky, sunlight and shadows on the original maps
  • Objects visible through platforms on Madness
  • A single bright pixel flashing on some screens

Interface

  • Health bar and other HUD elements drawn incorrectly
  • Cut-off item icons
  • Team lists in lobbies filling incorrectly
  • The "Open all" button for card notifications not working
  • Text displayed incorrectly in some windows
  • The list not updating when switching between hull and turret while changing visuals
  • Some containers crashing the game

Account and rewards

  • Registration failing for some players
  • Containers from daily bonus shards only showing up after a restart
  • Daily bonus teleport issues

Honorable mentions

Some players went far beyond a quick bug report. They tested the very first versions, sent crash files, installed test builds and reported back, sometimes within minutes. Without them the random battle crashes would still be in the game.

bodr, phoenixf1re, Doki, Italian_Style, Steam_Master and god.00: thank you. As a small thank-you, each of you has received 7 days of Premium.

Heads-up: logs are in a new place

With the new foundation, the game writes its log files and crash reports to a different location than before. If you want to report a crash, please check the guide on finding your crash logs first – it shows where to find them now.

If you run into anything else, please keep reporting it. It helps more than you think.

One more thing

To see how far the new foundation can go, we tried something that was completely out of reach before: Revive Tanki on an iPad. It starts, it connects, and you can join a battle.

This is an experiment, not an announcement. There are no touch controls yet and there is no release planned for now. But it shows what kind of things have become possible.

What's next

The foundation is in place, the worst bugs are out, and the next version is already live as you read this. From here on it is about the game itself again. If something still does not work the way it should, tell us – your reports are what got us through the last days this quickly.
